Skates
new to derby? Here's what to look for in a pair of skates!
A new pair of roller skates can range in price from as low $40 up to nearly $1000! With a price range like that, it can be overwhelming to decide what type type makes the best sense for a new skater!
I have a few recommendations based on my experience, and some specific features of what to look for when shopping for a pair of skates.
Tip #1 - Toe Stops
The first thing I reccomend looking for in a pair of skates is an adjustable toe stop.
Tip #2 - Boots
I find that I am really hard on my stuff. Boots made of composite material are more durable than leather, and leather boots are more durable than vinyl. If you're just starting, a vinyl boot might be okay, but if you intend to skate at a higher intensity... go for something with a bit more staying power.
When playing roller derby, you want to avoid anything with much heel. The way you skate when you're playing derby is in a lower squat stance - this is super important for stability. Heeled skates (while super adorable) are designed to put you in a more upright position.
